Electroless nickel (autocatalytic or chemical nickel) plating is an auto-catalytic reaction used to deposit a coating of nickel on a substrate. Unlike electroplating, it is not necessary to pass an electric current through the solution to form a deposit. Due to the phosphorus content of approximately 8% the corrosion resistance and wear resistance is superior to pure nickel plating.
By applying a heat treatment the hardness of the nickel-phosphorous can be increased to nearly 1000 Vickers.

A major advantage of this process compared to electroplated nickel is the uniform layer thickness.
Under standard conditions the tolerance of the layer thickness is about 2μm.
